Every-year the Design & Innovation Awards (DIA) elect the bicycle industry products that stand-out regarding functionality, components and overall aesthetic.

This season 76 awards highlighted pedals, helmets, lights, clothes, sports gear and - of course - many bicycles, which Homage and Roadster by Riese and Müller and the Tern GSD R14.

Only the best of the best enters the history records, for excellency. Nevertheless, it is just not about giving titles, bearing in mind the team of journalists, professional "test riders" and industry experts.

The tests were indeed fascinating: a team of 30 people united by their passion for bicycles, five sprinters, six cars, more than 21 train connections, five broken chains, six cars, 3.7 litres of tube isolator, 1237 coffees, 298 battery charges including a burned-out charger.

2021 AWARDS: Riese & Müller

Riese and Müller is no foreigner to DIA.

As a matter of fact, since 2017 that the German brand has been distinguished every year in the URBAN category. It all started five years ago with the Packster Nuvinci.

In 2018 it was two times distinguished with the Supercharger and Packster 40, as from that year on it always gathered two awards.

Back in 2019, it was the time of the urban Nevo GT and the hybrid urban/cargo Multicharger.

The year after, 2020, once again now with a cargo bike, this time the giant Load 60, and the Superdelite GT ROHLOFF, till today the top-model from Riese and Müller.

HOMAGE

At first sight, Homage’ low-step frame stands out, allowing for mounting/dismounting the bicycle without much effort. Although the big stand-out is the full-suspension, that the German brand rightly calls Control Technology. The front fork and the middle shock absorber tube work together to provide safe and comfortable rides. It's a unique setting in the market that justifies this DIA.

With the deepsea blue metallic colour, there is the possibility to include two integrated Bosch PowerTube 625 Wh batteries, as Homage is the only Riese and Müller E-Bike with this configuration. There is a folding Abus Bordo 6000 lock behind the saddle, fixed in a way that seems like it is suspended in the air (almost like a scorpions tail).

The rear-rack can hold about 35 kg of cargo! The base motor is a Bosch Performance Line CX that turns every city hill into a levelled road. The Homage is an all-terrain bicycle in the urban landscape.

ROADSTER

The Roadster presents a "revolutionary design", generally associated with a "slim silhouette". This E-Bike includes a powerful Bosch Performance Line CX, commonly associated with more sporty bikes, with an 85 Nm of torque. The battery - also from Bosch - is a PowerTube 500 Wh, frame integrated, that maintains a clean design aesthetically speaking, something, even more, highlighted thanks to almost all cables integrated into the bike's frame.

It has a bit more than 20 kg, being one of the lightest E-Bike of the market bearing in mind its top components, which is already a DIA motive: versatile for the everyday ride and even carrying in public transportation. "With a sports handling, it's a wolf disguised as a sheep".

2021 AWARDS: tern

This Taiwanese Cargo Electric Bicycle company is called the "Swiss army-knife of E-Bikes" as it is practically up to anything.

Introducing a new E-Cargo Bike that has left the jury astonished suggests innovation and excellence.
Being recognized and placed among the best indicates that their creation made a significant impact and impressed the judging panel. This achievement will for sure lead to increased recognition and success in the field of cargo bikes.

GSD R14

One of this year's surprises relies on the top-model GSD R14, from Tern.

It can withhold a total weight of 200 kg, even with its tiny 20" wheels. It includes a complete portfolio of extras, since rain protections, padded seats (for two kids or one adult), side panniers, cargo platforms… It's an actual modular bicycle.

Everything is adaptable, even the saddle and handlebar, thanks to the quick-release levers for sizes between 150 and 195 cm. Although small, it weighs about 37 kg, which is standard bearing in mind the components: a ROHLOFF internal gear hub (14 electric speed), Bosch Cargo Line Cruise motor, dual Bosch PowerPack 500 Wh. It's one of the most versatile electric bicycles currently available in the world for everyday life or families.

Riese & Müller | Homage4

Still Getting Sh!t Done

The new GSD (Gen3) takes the family electric cargo bike to a whole ‘nother level. Smarter than ever and packing even more muscle with a re-engineered frame that handles a max gross vehicle weight of 210 kg (463 lb), it’ll help you carry 2 loved ones and weekly grocery hauls with newfound ease—but it’s similar in length to a regular bike to remain surprisingly manageable.

The new GSD Gen3 still comes with both generations of Bosch system. The Smart (which is the most recent architecture) and the non-smart system (which was the GSD Gen2 architecture).
