THE PERFECT E-BIKE FOR THE CAMINO

WHY WE CHOSE THE NEVO

The Portuguese Camino should feel steady, personal, and deeply connected to the places you move through.

For the Portuguese Camino from Porto to Santiago, we chose the Riese & Müller Nevo Touring because it gives riders comfort, safety, stability, reliable assistance, and confidence with luggage.

You are riding for several consecutive days, often with panniers, changing surfaces, coastal wind, rolling terrain, village roads, forest paths, gravel sections, climbs, and long hours. So the bike needs to help you:

  • Reduce fatigue over several days;

  • Feel stable with luggage and changing terrain;

  • Provide smooth assistance when the road gets longer or steeper;

  • Offer enough battery capacity for realistic daily stages;

  • Be easy and reassuring for riders who may not be daily cyclists.

Every detail of our setup has been designed with long-distance touring on the Portuguese Camino in mind.

WHAT THE CAMINO ASKS FROM A BIKE

The Portuguese Camino is not extreme, but it is real.

Over several days, small details start to matter.
A bike that feels comfortable on day one needs to keep feeling comfortable on day five, six, or seven.
A bike that feels stable without luggage needs to remain stable when loaded with panniers.

Assistance should be powerful enough for climbs and headwinds, but natural enough to keep the ride feeling like your own.

On the Camino, the best bike is not necessarily the fastest one. It is the one that helps you stay present, confident, and comfortable for the entire journey.

That is why we use a premium touring e-bike rather than a standard rental e-bike.

COMFORT ON LONG DISTANCES

The first thing you notice about the Nevo is how incredibly easy it is to get on and off the bike.

The low step-through frame makes a difference. On the Camino, you stop often: for cafés, viewpoints, chapels, photos, stamps, water, and small moments that were never in the plan. Getting on and off easily becomes part of the experience, and the Nevo makes mounting and dismounting effortless.

Even with panniers or heavier touring bags, the Nevo remains practical and accessible.

The riding position is upright and relaxed, reducing pressure on the wrists, shoulders, and lower back during long riding days. To increase comfort further, our setup includes suspension on the fork and on the seatpost, ergonomic contact points, wide all-terrain tires, and a saddle chosen for long-distance leisure and mixed-terrain riding. The overall feeling is remarkably smooth and stable.

With multiple frame sizes available, we can accommodate riders from approximately 1.50m to 2.00m tall. Combined with the adjustable saddle and stem, each bike can be fine-tuned for anything from a relaxed, upright riding position to a more dynamic/sporty touring setup.

The benefit is simple: less strain, more presence.

SUSPENSION WHERE IT MATTERS

Long-distance comfort is not only about posture. It is also about how the bike absorbs the road.

The combination of the SR Suntour AION suspension fork and the Kinekt active suspension seatpost makes a noticeable difference on the Camino, especially over consecutive days on mixed terrain.

Cobblestones, gravel sections, rough village streets, forest paths, and uneven surfaces are all part of the route. The suspension fork helps absorb impacts at the front of the bike, while the Kinekt seatpost reduces vibrations and shocks reaching the rider through the saddle.

This means less fatigue on the back, arms, hips, and shoulders, and a smoother, more enjoyable ride day after day.

The Ergon ergonomic grips add another layer of comfort by distributing pressure more naturally across the hands. They help reduce wrist discomfort and numbness, which can become a real issue during long touring stages.

STABLE, EVEN WITH LUGGAGE

Once you add panniers, water, layers, rain gear, snacks, personal items, and small daily essentials, the way a bike handles becomes much more important.

The Nevo’s frame, geometry, integrated battery position, and touring setup create a balanced and predictable feeling, even when carrying luggage. This matters especially when the surface changes from asphalt to compact gravel, forest tracks, cycle paths, cobblestones, or short climbs.

The integrated rear rack is perfectly suited for our Ortlieb panniers up to 40L, helping the bike maintain excellent balance and stability even when fully loaded.

At the front, the 18L Riese & Müller front carrier keeps everyday essentials easily accessible throughout the ride. It is ideal for items such as snacks, layers, chargers, documents, a camera, or anything you may want to reach without opening your rear panniers.

Together, this setup improves comfort, organization, and weight distribution on long touring days.

We also offer luggage storage and luggage transport options.
Just let us know your requirements, and we will be happy to assist.

BOSCH ASSISTANCE FOR REAL CAMINO CONDITIONS

On the Portuguese Camino there are long days. There can be coastal headwinds. There are climbs, especially closer to the later stages. And after several days, even moderate terrain can feel different in the body.

That is where Bosch assistance matters.

Our e-bikes are equipped with Bosch systems designed to provide natural, controlled support.
Instead of feeling like the bike is taking over, the assistance helps you keep a comfortable pace when the terrain, wind, or accumulated fatigue starts to ask more from you.

The goal is not to remove the effort completely. The Camino should still feel earned.
The goal is to make the effort sustainable, so you can enjoy the journey without being overwhelmed by it.

Battery and charging: what to expect

Our e-bikes are equipped with Bosch batteries of up to 625Wh, designed for long riding days.

In most cases, a single charge is enough for a full day of riding. That said, range always depends on several conditions: elevation, wind, rider weight, luggage, temperature, surface, tyre pressure, and the assistance level you choose.

As a realistic reference, you should expect a range of around 60 to 80 km.

For the Camino, we recommend a simple charging rhythm:

  • Charge the battery overnight at your accommodation.

  • When possible, top up during lunch.

  • Use higher assistance when it truly helps, such as climbs, headwind, or tired legs.

  • Keep an eye on range, especially on longer or hillier days.

This gives you freedom to ride more comfortably and use a higher assistance level when needed, without turning battery management into a concern.

TIRES AND PUNCTURE PROTECTION

The Johnny Watts and/or Smart Sam are all-terrain tires chosen for the mixed terrain of the Camino.
Over a single day, riders can move between asphalt, cobblestones, gravel paths, forest sections, and wet village roads.

These tires offer the right balance between grip, durability, and smooth rolling, helping the bike feel stable and efficient without making the ride heavier than it needs to be.

They give riders more confidence across changing surfaces, especially when carrying panniers or riding longer daily stages.

We decided to pair them with Tannus tire protection, which adds an extra layer of reassurance by helping reduce the risk of punctures. On the Camino, a flat tire can interrupt the rhythm of the day and create unnecessary stress. This protection helps keep the journey smoother, more reliable, and more focused on the experience rather than mechanical issues.

TRANSMISSION MADE FOR TOURING

The Nevo is available in multiple configurations, but for Santiago, we prepared our fleet with a touring version, with derailleur gearing for its versatility, reliability, and user-friendliness.

Equipped with the Shimano CUES 11-speed drivetrain, it’s perfectly suited for steep climbs, fast descents, and relaxed flat sections. A wide gear range allows riders to keep a comfortable cadence throughout the journey.

More than that, this transmission delivers smooth and precise shifting while also being exceptionally durable and easy to service if needed, which is an important advantage for long-distance touring and multi-day rides.

For riders looking for a dependable and intuitive setup for the Camino, the Nevo Touring strikes an excellent balance between performance, simplicity, and overall reliability.

STABILITY, SAFETY, AND CONTROL

One of the Nevo’s greatest strengths is how planted and secure it feels.

Even when carrying luggage, the bike remains robust, balanced, and predictable.
This gives riders confidence, especially those who may not be used to riding touring e-bikes.

The low centre of gravity created by the frame geometry and integrated battery improves handling and stability. Combined with powerful hydraulic disc brakes, the Nevo inspires trust across a wide range of riding conditions.

Whether you are descending, riding through wet roads, crossing gravel sections, or moving through villages, the bike offers the control and reassurance needed for a multi-day Camino.

Integrated lights add another layer of safety, especially for early starts, cloudy days, or lower-light conditions.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR THE ROAD

A premium Camino rental is not only the e-bike. It is the full setup around it.

For rental-only experiences, our standard equipment can include:

  • Helmet: ABUS Urban-I 4.0

  • Waterproof rear panniers: x2 Ortlieb Back-Roller 20L.

  • Font bag mounted on the front rack for stable, practical access.

  • High-security lock: ABUS CityChain 1010.

  • Charger: BOSCH 4A, one per bike.

  • Optional SPD Shimano Deore XT pedals, if requested.

  • Full mechanical kit per bike, including inner tubes, patches, tyre levers, mini pump, multi-tool with chain tool, and reflective vest.

These details matter because they reduce friction.

You do not need to improvise a luggage system. You do not need to wonder if the panniers will handle the weather. You do not need to start the Camino by solving equipment problems.

You arrive, we brief you, and you ride.

SAFETY, MAINTENANCE, AND CARE

Before each rental, our e-bikes are checked and prepared by our team.

This is part of the premium experience. An e-bike for the Camino must not only be comfortable. It has to be reliable. Brakes, tyres, drivetrain, battery, pannier mounts, accessories, and overall condition all matter when you are about to ride for several days.

We also ask that e-bikes be stored overnight in a secure, indoor space at your accommodation.
This protects the bike, the equipment, and your journey.

Please note that our e-bikes cannot be transported by ferry or boat. These operators do not provide insurance for electric bikes, and even small impacts during loading, unloading, or transport can damage important components. Transporting the bikes by ferry or boat against our policy may result in the loss of the security deposit.
We prefer to clarify these details early so your experience remains smooth from start to finish.

Who is our e-bike best for?

The Nevo is ideal for riders who are focused on comfort, safety, performance, and a premium way to cycle the Camino without turning the journey into a physical test.

It is especially well-suited for:

  • Couples riding together.

  • Friends with different fitness levels.

  • Pilgrims who want to cover a meaningful distance without rushing.

  • Riders who value comfort and confidence over speed.

  • People who want to stop often and enjoy the Way.

  • Travellers who want a premium, supported rental experience.

You do not need to be an expert cyclist. You should be comfortable riding a bike and prepared for several hours of cycling each day. The e-bike assistance helps a lot, but this is still a multi-day journey, and your body will feel the accumulated distance.
