THE POWERHOUSE

Along with the motor, the battery is the next critical component in an E-Bike.

Interestingly, the same safety measures that apply to electric bicycles also apply to the batteries: where we store them, the road conditions we navigate, exposure to temperatures, prolonged use, and weather conditions.

Below, you'll find some tips to enhance the lifetime of your E-Bike battery.

Charging

The optimal charge for E-Bike batteries is typically within the range of 20% to 80%.

Charging within this range helps maintain battery health and prolong its overall lifespan.
It's recommended to avoid fully depleting the battery or consistently charging it to 100%, as extreme charge levels can contribute to faster degradation over time. Regularly keeping the charge between 20% and 80% is a good practice for maximizing the performance and longevity of E-Bike batteries.

Another situation to bear into account is how long we will keep our E-Bike out of the streets.
Some batteries suffer long term effect, by discharging. It’s a kind of natural phenomenon that occurs with more emphasis with use. For this reason, batteries should be stored with energy levels between 30 and 60%. Those are ideal levels to keep ion-lithium cells at bay, with the chemical properties in a kind of standby state.

PARKING

If we have no choice but to park our E-Bike on the street in broad daylight, it is preferable to do so in the shade, far away from harmful sunlight.

Each lithium-ion cell is protected with a steel covering and positioned inside a plastic or aluminum case. Direct contact with heat, even from the sun, is never a good idea.

Simply parking our machine can significantly impact the life expectancy of batteries.
Temperatures between 10 and 20ºC are excellent to preserve lithium-ion cells.

TEMPERATURE

Temperatures above 30ºC are detrimental to battery longevity.

Not only are we dooming it to a short life, but it can also create dangerous situations: the chemical substances would be at risk of flammable conditions.

BOSCH batteries have an integrated system for preventing overheating, exposure to excessive temperatures and significant discharges. It does not affect much the current energy level the moment we decide to finally charge their batteries.

On the other hand, preserving batteries under cold conditions is also not good: besides the natural humidity conditions - hazardous for every electric component - it also unstabilizes the cells.

FAULTY BATTERY

If something isn't right with our E-Bike battery, it's crucial to contact the dealer or official brand representative the moment a faulty battery is detected.

Also, no matter the skills and advanced knowledge regarding ion-lithium cells and chemistry, a battery should never be opened to prevent hazard leaks, unintentional fires, and short-circuits that can damage the E-Bike all around.

Insisting on ridding under malfunction is a signed “death” sentence to components.
Also, we are putting our lives and others in serious risk of an accident.

efficiency

We can measure our battery efficiency by taking into account:

  • How smooth we can pedal:
    Less pressure to the pedal = less effort to the drive unit = less battery consumed;

  • How much resistance can we handle: Heavy cargo requires more energy;

  • Terrains to pedal: Bumpy roads and hills push the drive unit behaviour;

  • Our riding action: Mixing motor assist modes with our leg effort.

Nowadays, even simple displays - besides essential information such as real-time speed and estimated riding distance according to selected motor assisting mode and remaining battery - show us how much pedal pressure we are using to ride.

How far we go is entirely dependent on ourselves.
